Robert Louis Stevenson, the famous Scottish writer behind Kidnapped, Treasure Island, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and his then new wife, Fanny, spent their honeymoon in the 1870s on an abandoned mining site atop nearby Mt. Veeder. His time in the valley left a lasting impression, enough for his words to be immortalized at its entrance.
