About the Event
George Eliot's celebrated Victorian masterpiece Middlemarch has received popular and critical praise since its publication in 1872. Indeed, it was a success even prior to the full publication since it had been serialized the year before.
George Eliot divided Middlemarch into eight books of approximately 110 pages each and these installments will inform the framework of our reading schedule. The result will be an engaging in-depth study of Eliot's literary skill as well as her insights into 19th century culture, science and psychology.
Using the Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition, our discussions will be based on the technique of Shared Inquiry developed by the Great Books Foundation. The discussions will be facilitated by Folio librarian Lillian Dabney. Meetings will be held weekly on Mondays, excluding President's Day. See the full schedule below for details.
