About the Event

Entre Ríos Books, Folio: The Seattle Atheneaum and The Northwest Translators and Interpreters Society (NOTIS) invite you to to an evening of English and Spanish poetry celebrating the publication of “Winter Season” by Argentinian poet, novelist, and literary critic Carolina Esses, in conversation with her translator and returning Folio guest speaker Allison A. deFreese. Enjoy a complimentary wine reception featuring a selection of Argentinian wines and meet Carolina on her first visit to Seattle and the Northwest!

“Winter Season” is a journey into the darkest season where familial remembrance and longing become entangled in the memory of nature itself. A lyric on what truly binds us grounded in a distinctly Argentinian landscape, Winter Season is the first full-length English translation of Carolina Esses. “Has the birch abandoned its hope for snow? / Or is it imagining a more subtle form / of winter in the air?”

This is a profoundly intimate book— of dissolving borders, grief, and ultimately solace and belonging, perfect for quiet reading on a melancholy winter afternoon. First published as Temporada de invierno by Bajo la luna in 2009, we present the translation by Allison A. deFreese in a bilingual edition with photography by Argentinian artist Virginia Gauna Torres.

About Entre Ríos Books

We are an independent press publishing poetry, works about poetry, translations, and collaborations between poets and artists of all types.

We have a specific interest in publishing contemporary Argentinian poetry in bilingual editions.

Why “Entre Ríos” for a press based in Seattle?

Indeed, Entre Lagos would be more fitting! Entre Ríos is a province in Argentina and was one of three major destinations for Jewish immigrants escaping the pogroms of Russia and Ukraine at the end of the 19th Century.  So, we take our name to honor some of our family history and ties to Argentina and remain inspired by that potential of being “between rivers.”
