A Chronicle of England, B.C. 55-A.D. 1485 by James William Edmund Doyle . London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, & Green, 1864.

One of the latest treasures to be added to our collection is this hi-spot of Victorian color printing.

Within the text of Doyle's history of England are 81 wood-engraved illustrations masterfully engraved and colored by Edmund Evans.

Evans perfected the chromoxylography process which transformed the illustrated children's book. His work helped propel the likes of Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway, and Randolph Caldecott to their places as the premier illustrators of the time.

His major of work of the 1860's was Doyle's A Chronicle of England.

From the Collection of Malcolm Moore.
